"Time" (2021) - Reflections on Hong Kong's Aging Population"

Time (2021)

'Time'(2021) is directed by Ricky Ko Tsz Pun, with screenplay by Yin Tse and Suet-Ying Chung. The cast includes Bo-Bo Fung, Suet Lam, Eric Kwok, and Sam Lee. You may be suprised, this is Yin Tse without his signature glasses. Regardless of the story's content, just the fact that they could enlist the 84-year-old Yin Tse is a testament to the producer's prowess, making this film a sincere effort.

The story revolves around three retired hitmen who have entered their golden years. As they try to lead ordinary lives after leaving their murderous profession behind, they find themselves gradually outdated and confronted with issues like unemployment, family discord, and the absence of care. The script takes this angle to explore their changing values and attitudes as senior citizens and documents the sparks that fly as different generations clash.

In reality, issues related to the elderly are not new. According to demographic projections for Hong Kong, it is estimated that by 2066, the elderly population will reach 2.59 million (36.6%), while the proportion of the population under 15 years old will gradually decline to 650,000 (9.2%). The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a society with 7% or more of the population aged 65 and above as an aging society, 14% as an aged society, and 20% as a super-aged society. In 40 years, both you and I may step into old age, becoming members of this super-aged society. This film encourages you to contemplate your goals in old age.

The only drawback is that the film's promotional style is quite different from its actual style. Watching the trailers, you might not realize that it's a comedy. Perhaps, this was a playful trick by the producers. However, as Ricky Ko's debut feature film, the chemistry between seasoned actors and emerging talents is palpable. In terms of Hong Kong cinema, "Time" can undoubtedly be regarded as a unique and stylish work!
